His thesis, titled “Sewage Treatment by Anaerobic Hybrid Reactor,” under the guidance of Dr. I.H. Farooqui and Dr. A.A. Siddiqui, further honed his expertise in wastewater treatment technologies. Driven by a passion for environmental sustainability, Dr. Khan pursued a PhD in Civil (Environmental Engineering) at the prestigious IIT Roorkee. His doctoral research, supervised by Prof. A.A. Kazmi, Prof. Indu Mehrotra, and Dr. Beni Lew, focused on the post-treatment of UASB effluent, emphasizing aeration and variants of the activated sludge process. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Jamia Millia Islamia (Central University), New Delhi, a position he has held since July 2014. His teaching experience is extensive, having previously held positions at NIT Kurukshetra, IIT Roorkee, Debub University in Ethiopia, and AMU Aligarh.

He worked as a Senior Wastewater Specialist at Royal Haskoning DHV-BV, a leading water and wastewater consultancy organization, from March 2012 to July 2014. He also contributed to the design of urban drainage and sewerage systems for major infrastructure projects in India and conducted feasibility studies for stormwater management and lake linking in Raipur, Chhattisgarh.
